Selected poetry written by
Ben Stivers

I have been most honored that Ben  Stivers has shared his poetry with me.  I have had the opportunity to read both published and non published works by Ben and I love his gift of words.  He  truly has the heart of a poet and is working diligently at becoming an accomplished  poet and novelist.  When Ben first asked me to illustrate some of his poetry, I was more than surprised.  His confidence in my talent gave me the courage to pick up my pencil again.  I have been inspired by both his works and his friendship.

Although, the original illustration for Ben's poem "Helen" (Published in a 1998 issue of Maelstrom) was my pencil sketch of Bryan Keller's "Icon", I felt that Bryan's work was a more fitting illustration and so that is the one I chose to display here.

What would someone learn about you if they could read your journal?
I know that if I kept a journal, people might be surprised at what they would find within.....there is so much that a person "is"...that no one ever really knows.....how wonderful it would be to be able to love, trust and believe in someone enough that we could open our journal to them.

If the angel here looks a little different or strange, it is because I combined my early try angel, minus the hideous wings with the wings from the final angel.  Thank God for PhotoShop. It isn't perfect but I haven't had much practice doing that sort of thing lately.

I really felt that the more provocative angel fit the part for Ben's poem (but she needed decent wings).  As I read it, I pictured an angel being cast  from heaven for perhaps loving another angel in heaven,  more than God.  As he falls, he sees her there....
